The morning after Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mervis delivered an outstanding address to the Perth Jewish Community at Perth Hebrew Congregation, he honed in on ¼«Æ··´²îæ» and the centrality of education to Jewish life.

Our students were treated to a very special address and subsequent classroom visits, during which Rabbi Mervis spoke about what inspired him as a student; a particular individual who managed to overcome difficulties and, in so doing, garnered immense respect and inspired others.

Mid-morning, I attended his discussion with AUJS and our Youth Leaders, during which he addressed the importance of the rhythm of Jewish life, the importance of considering opposing views, and the mechanisms for engaging broader society to understand the key tenets of Judaism and Zionism.

Speaking with our Jewish Life and Learning Team, Rabbi Mervis focused on how in a single day, we start in humble measure, build up through the afternoon and reach a crescendo in the evening. To conclude, Rabbi Mervis addressed the Board and the Senior Leadership of the School. He impressed upon us the importance of good governance, progress and leaving a legacy – aim high and be brave!

Selfishly and strategically, I chose to attend each of these sessions to enable me to draw the threads of his talks together. In doing so, it gives me clarity in my role.

Together, we are weaving the tapestry that is ¼«Æ··´²îæ» and our broader Perth Jewish Community.

Momentum is building!
